Semangat Yang Baru: Forging a New Singapore Spirit

An exuberant presentation of a pioneering frame of mind, made accessible to visitors of all ages through experiential design.

Designed as a pilot for the upcoming Founders’ Memorial to study the needs of its future interpretive gallery, “Semangat yang Bahru” takes inspiration from the pioneering frame of mind that Singapore’s post-independence leaders embodied. Mirroring the exhibition title’s direct reference to the “new” post-independence attitude, the gallery’s design draws inspiration from the exuberant architecture and visual culture of the 1960s and beyond.

The visitor’s journey begins within the atrium of the National Museum’s basement, where a colourful assemblage of framework forms define the exhibition’s prelude - a registration and introductory space, expressing a sense of something that is in-progress. A series of scrolling ticker tapes is plastered over one of these frameworks, giving glimpses of the exhibition’s curatorial content, and prior visitors’ responses to it. A larger-than-life image of Singapore’s post-independence leaders is stretched over a curvilinear framework, and directs visitors into the gallery’s first space - an immersive multimedia experience that expounds on the challenges the nation faced at the cusp of independence. Within this amorphous space, projections are cast onto curved walls, and reflected off prismatic totems scattered within the space.

Visitors traverse through a sweeping array of stories and spaces that reflect the different facets of nation building in post-independence Singapore - ranging from political rallies, mid-century classrooms, evocations of Paya Lebar Airport, post-war public housing, and rural villages. These are evoked as abstracted atmospheres, through a playful combination of vibrant colours, period-appropriate materials, and contextual imagery and projections.
The midpoint of the exhibition is a distinctive triangular space that presents the story of Singapore’s state emblems, and international recognition of its new statehood. Visually and materially distinctive from other sections, this space expresses a degree of gravitas through its velvet-like walls and floors, and pared-back selection of artefacts. A fluttering flag, set within a niche at the triangle’s apex, is displayed alongside the state crest. Across from these two artefacts are two unique interactive stations that make this section accessible to younger audiences - one involves flag-raising, and the other invites visitors to understand the symbolism behind flags by designing their own.

The exuberance of the preceding spaces give way to a conclusion section that is decidedly muted in design, as visitors are invited to contemplate the costs and sacrifices of Singapore’s rapid post-independence growth, as well as their aspirations for the future. Here, the exhibition’s design returns to the framework motif that was found in the exhibition’s prelude, pointing towards the notion that nation building is an ongoing process.

In collaboration with Story Inc and MAKE, the visitor’s experience throughout the gallery is augmented by a multimedia experience that invites visitors to contribute their views on the narrative that is put forward and the exhibition’s format, among other things. This is humanised and made accessible to visitors of all ages by presenting these behind an interface of “characters” that are contextually-inspired. This layer lends greater engagement and interactivity to encourage conversations about the values of Singapore’s pioneers, and the relevance of these today.
