Body & Spirit

A special exhibition about wellness and the wholeness of body, spirit, and mind.

Body and Spirit: The Human Body in Thought and Practice, is a special exhibition at the Asian Civilisation Museum that talks about wellness and the wholeness of body, spirit, and mind. It features over 100 objects from the National Collection, private collectors, and local communities, in a display of sacred and ritual art from Singapore and the region.

The design of the show is kept minimal with pure geometries of shapes and light segmenting and anchoring the various sections. At the introduction space, a dramatic semi-circular wall becomes a huge light box and envelops the visitors, forming a sort of ‘enlightened’ space. From here, visitors can choose to enter into the various sections through huge metallic portals. Beyond the introduction, the rest of the spaces are dramatically washed in a special light effect mimicking jewels or stars at night - in fact, these are reflections from the jewels on the key Barong artefact. Abstracted architectural arches, as a nod to the various religious buildings in the world, floats above the galleries, tying the whole experience together.
We are also involved in designing two other accompanying special showcases and spaces. Buddha Relics displays gems and other precious offerings found together with bone relics of the Buddha in the Piprahwa Stupa in India in 1898. The design of the space is given a singular pure treatment of a soft graduated warm tones that wraps and envelops across the entire space and surfaces, going across walls, showcases, and floors. The effect is slightly contemplative, calming and respectful of the artefacts on display.

And finally, The Mindfulness Lab, an interactive space to discover Asian wellness practices. Designed as a series of plush enclosed pods where one can step into and immerse in a series of activities - from a specially commissioned sonic soundscape, to doing meditative craft work and watching wellness videos.
